Synopsis
This is a fictional story inspired by history; its characters and events do not represent real individuals or organizations. It opens with someone walking along the shore of Peleliu Island, saying, 'My grandfather was here.' Whose grandchild this is becomes clear later. In summer 1944, Private Tamaru, an aspiring manga artist, is stationed on Peleliu, a South Pacific island surrounded by coral reefs and lush forest. On September 4, around 800 ships and 40,000 personnel of the US Third Fleet depart for the island to seize its airfield as a base for the campaign in the Philippines. About 10,000 Japanese defenders prepare for a prolonged battle from caves large enough to shelter them all. US forces bomb the island repeatedly, burning the jungle around the airfield. Early on September 15, the US First Marine Division lands on Peleliu.
