A potted balsam plant in a tin can sits in the prison cell of Minoru Akutsu, an elderly man serving a life sentence. One day he begins to hear it speak. The plant tells him that its predecessors grew outside the apartment where he once lived with a woman and her son, and that their memories pass from one generation to the next. They begin discussing events from 1987, when Akutsu moved there. He was then an underling of a yakuza named Tsutsumi. Nana Nagata and her son Kensuke, who lived with Akutsu, were not his relatives, but he and Nana shared a modest life and enjoyed walking around town on days off. One day a younger gang member, Wakamatsu, tells Tsutsumi and Akutsu that land deals are the future. Following Wakamatsu's advice, Akutsu makes some money from property transactions and gains underlings of his own. After learning of a civil-law provision on acquiring property through long possession, he places an empty cabinet bearing his name on a nearby vacant lot whose owner cannot be contacted.
